The Tale of Sir Conn and the Wood Nymphs

The Causeway is a long and windy road, far from any signs of civilization. The air took on a magical quality as the trail dwindled away to nothing. When they thought they had almost come too far, they came upon a clearing. Sir Conn and his brave squire Aubery looked on, wondering why they were lead here by the gypsy. Just as they were about to leave and continue their quest elsewhere, their ears captured the faint sound of maidens singing!

What an enchanting and hypnotizing melody this poor monk had the honor to hear. We soon discovered that the song was sung by three highly beautiful nymphs, who could easily capture the heart of any man (excepting, of course, this monk, who has taken a vow of chastity). The nymphs flittered about. His Grace calls forth to the nymphs in a gentle voice, telling them he is in search of the Dragon's Egg. He then instructed us all to remain quiet and not frighten the girls, and soon they became brave and ventured forward, changing their song, which I have the honor of relating to you now. At times they sang together, at times they sang apart, while dancing in and among our small group, in a wondrous weave of song and spirit.

Who dares intrude upon our revelry?
a monk, a bay, and mighty chivalry!
But why do they honor us with their company?
They wish to EGG-samine us,
To EGG-stract information,
To EGG-spedite their efforts.
Strength and weapons avail him not!
And shining armor is only hot!
But help from the faeries can be got.
We may have something we can use, if you satisfy our muse,
Sword and shield you strongly wield,
but neither nor both shall make us yield!

Then together they implored "Please our ears, and please them well, ere our assistance you compel." And with that final request, they all but disappeared in the wood, and the simple eye of this monk could barely discern them among the leaves when they did not move.

As if inspired by the muse himself, Sir Conn, Viscount of Northshield, Duke of Calontir, Knight and Laurel, opened his mouth and his heart, and sang of love. He sang a song he wrote to his Lady Wife Kassandra, Viscountess of Northshield. A song of promise. A song of love. A song inspired by Lady Kassandra's love of him and her strength of purpose and support. A song that brought tears of joy to our eyes. A song that brought forth the wood nymphs, who hummed and danced with the melody of Duke Conn's heart.

When His Grace completed his music, they nymphs as one sang, "For pleasing us as we required, you shall have what you desired!" And quicker than thought each nymph bestowed upon the Knight and squire a wreath of leaves and a kiss. But, before scampering back to their woodland hiding place, one of the nymphs gave His Grace a clue. When read it explained how to connect the two previously drawn lines, and with his knowledge of geometry, Duke Conn deduced the location of the stolen dragon egg!

And the Quest continued…
